Holy shit ! What has this thread turned to.
I'll just say this:
I defended TFA while it was getting all the hate, I liked the trailer, but after seeing the movie, I didn't like it. I defended EA Battlefront and didn't like it either. I won't defend rogue one.
Also, speaking of feminists, social justice warriors, and mary sues, there needs to be a movie made called "The last straight white male", in which all white males have been exterminated for cultural enrichment .
(and yes, I know I'm taking this too far XD)

In Poland, many years ago we had a cult (and *still* cult) film, named "Sexmission", that depicted world where all males (white or otherwise) were exterminated. It centers around 2 male protagonists (with at least one of them being typical "macho" type of that era, before "macho" was even a world) excavated from ruined cryo chambers.
While mainly clever satire against socialism in soviet union satelite countries, it is still a good comedy to watch. Recommending, if you can find decent English subtitles
That said, I'm very happy, that Disney opted for strong and independent female characters in the movies. There are not many things that irritate me more in stories than "damsely" girls (that's, probably, why I liked Leia's apperance in "Empire Strikes Back", and hated the cheap and uninspired fan service portrayal from "Return of the Jedi" - speaking of whole movie, not only the canonical slave suit... Hell, they even managed to make her Damsel In Distress in regards to ewoks, which is parody inside a parody) - got enough of that nonsense IRL (apart from outer layer facade), without doubt originating from popculture influence. Glad, if it is going to have even minimal influence on young girls, leaving a portrayal of protagonist that can take care of herself all right.
Did it have a red, rocky landscape in it? There's this movie I've been hunting or mis-remembering for decades. Watched it when I was a kid. Similar story, all women, last men on Earth, sci-fi-ish...
"This is a rebellion isn't it? I rebel." Oh my gosh, what a cringeworthy piece of writing. This is what I'd expect an edgy teenager to say to their parents.
I'm not expecting anything good. Disney will be doing the feminist role reversal again with the Jan Ors stand-in playing the lead while the faux Kyle can barely keep up, being a complete puss and shadow of his former incarnation. Jan will somehow be able to outsmart people far wiser and more experienced, defeat hordes of highly trained military men without breaking a sweat, and get away with acts of aggression towards her superiors that otherwise wouldn't be tolerated or even be taken seriously, especially from a woman, in the real world. Whoever her foes are within the empire, they will be hyped up to be unstoppable, except for our know-it-all heroine who will anti-climatically beat them in a completely implausible manner. The multi-cultural democratic rebellion will fight the evil white men and save the galaxy from conservatism, bringing hope to progressive Marxist idiots everywhere. I already watched a movie like that a few months ago. Why'd they have to make it again?
The people who defend movies like this and say you aren't "open minded" enough and shouldn't judge it have fallen for the trap of being too open-minded themselves. Just as one can be too close minded to understand another's perspective, you can fall for the other extreme of being too open minded, to the extent where you lose your ability to judge good from bad, becoming lost in a completely subjective world where everything is a matter of opinion and objective reality doesn't exist. Pre-judgement allows one to avoid making the same mistakes repeatedly. Non-judgement can be the cause of repeating the same mistake expecting a different outcome each time, and can be considered a form of insanity. Ironically, the "open minded" folk are often the most close minded, since they have come to the conclusion that their worldview of subjectivity is the ultimate viewpoint for all time, and wish to spread this message to everyone through passive-aggressive force and often with the support of the majority.

Pretty good post defining some peoples' mindset, although in my opinion, It has absolutely nothing to do with actually giving an opinion about a movie or reviewing it.If you want to go all sociological on the movie, that's fine, but I don't think that's correct seeing as how Star Wars is not a social movie...
When I see all this gender talk, all I can really think of is WHO GIVES A SHIT?Oh boy the idiots coming with gender talk again.
Star Wars is mass media that receives hundreds of millions of viewers the world over. Movies are an effective propaganda instrument as proved by the Third Reich and Communist Russia. If you do not see how hundreds of millions of people watching propaganda is dangerous, than you know nothing of history, sociology, or even basic psychology. It does not matter whether the film is a fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, or a drama. Propaganda uses archetypes and parallels, which are picked up by the subconscious mind, that covertly engender ideas with equal effectiveness regardless of the genre.
I see over and over again that people say "don't judge a movie before you've watched it. You don't know anything about it! Wait until it comes out, then judge!" This mindset, which I definitely saw a few people leaning towards on this forum, makes one an true glutton for punishment. Not only does this naive thinking lead to continual disappointment, but it attempts to shut down the rightful concerns of others who have accurately predicted future events, continuing this cycle of disappointment when it otherwise could have been stopped in its tracks forever. This means that those few who speak the truth are silenced by a foolish group of people who despite knowing nothing, through cognitive dissonance believe they know wiser. Disappointment and gullibility is repeated ad infinitum. No one grows wiser and the game continues.
I giggled Don't forget your tinfoil hat when the movie comes out, you have no idea what those crazy communists or nazis might be throwing at you. In fact, put two tinfoil hats just to be on the safe side. Also, read up on your marketing/sociology and/or consumer psychology and check out the full meaning of 'propaganda'. I'll give you a little hint - its not a necessarily negative thing, but that is a completely different story.
