Holy shit ! What has this thread turned to.

I don't know, but in past reflection Chaos and I have both fucked up in creating a positive or meaningful discussion.

@ChaostheChaotic lets try and set the scene for both of us to see why we think like this in regards to Rogue One (feel free to correct me on your end if I'm wrong)

you clearly didn't like the Force Awakens, and from what I can tell, anything else Disney has put out. therefore you feel the same way towards the company as you would EA, playing it safe, not listening to the consumers based on your past experience with their products. because of this you're judging this new movie to be the same, another cash-in on the Star Wars license that to you can only be poorly made based on how you felt about the Force Awakens. in addition there's that EU bias. what I mean by that is you have an extra level to despise Disney on, they prevented continuity of your favourite stories, the ones you have a nostalgic connection to like the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces series. instead of seeing possible references to the EU as a nice nod to what was (as the creators intended) you think its insulting that they don't re-canonise what you think was a great Star Wars story.

to an extent, I agree. KOTOR 2 is absolutely my favourite Star Wars story of all time and I was disappointed that the defining event of Malachor V wasn't present in Rebels, just the planet and some of the Sith architecture. however, what you have to realise is that the EU was fairly self-contained. there were very little hanging threads in the ongoing stories, it covered a huge expanse of the Star Wars saga and often contradicted itself. yet I still find it odd how they're not allowed to completely re-canonise an event or character, it always has to be different somehow - licensing maybe?

anyway, here's my perspective. I loved the Force Awakens and was delightfully surprised by it even after following every development very closely and watching all the TV spots (something I hope to avoid for Episode 8 and Rogue One). therefore, that's a positive to me already on Disney's side. if you're wondering how I can like a movie that features heavy similarities to A New Hope then maybe this video will help explain it:
.
in addition to feeling like Star Wars, I loved the cinematography, the characters and how it was driven by character moments instead of a stiff plot - that's what I remember the Original Trilogy being like. even if I didn't like the Force Awakens I'd still be giving Rogue One a chance because I'd be able to trace the faults to the screenplay (written by Lawrence Kasdan and JJ), the direction (JJ Abrams) or the characters. if your main issue is of similarity then understand that Rogue One is an anthology film, a series of films designed to take risks and explore different aspects of Star Wars that go beyond the traditional 'Jedi vs. the Darkside' conflict. its also under a completely different team and characters, the visual style may look similar to The Force Awakens but be prepared for something quite different.

I don't like engaging in arguments where the main point is to prove how much of an idiot the other person is (let's face it, that's pretty much what this was turning into), so this was my attempt to make sure we understand each other so we don't take prejudice over one another in the discussion.

I'll just say this:

I defended TFA while it was getting all the hate, I liked the trailer, but after seeing the movie, I didn't like it. I defended EA Battlefront and didn't like it either. I won't defend rogue one.

Also, speaking of feminists, social justice warriors, and mary sues, there needs to be a movie made called "The last straight white male", in which all white males have been exterminated for cultural enrichment :).

(and yes, I know I'm taking this too far XD)

don't feel like you have to defend your tastes, its only an issue if you start expecting everyone to like what you like and hate what you like or not realising that there were a lot of people out there that did like the Force Awakens. I'm obviously not indebted to the company, I don't get anything from defending Rogue One and there's not much that can be done at this stage, most complaints are either speculation or insignificant yet major because its such a short snippet of footage.

In Poland, many years ago we had a cult (and *still* cult) film, named "Sexmission", that depicted world where all males (white or otherwise) were exterminated. It centers around 2 male protagonists (with at least one of them being typical "macho" type of that era, before "macho" was even a world) excavated from ruined cryo chambers.

While mainly clever satire against socialism in soviet union satelite countries, it is still a good comedy to watch. Recommending, if you can find decent English subtitles ;)
---

That said, I'm very happy, that Disney opted for strong and independent female characters in the movies. There are not many things that irritate me more in stories than "damsely" girls (that's, probably, why I liked Leia's apperance in "Empire Strikes Back", and hated the cheap and uninspired fan service portrayal from "Return of the Jedi" - speaking of whole movie, not only the canonical slave suit... Hell, they even managed to make her Damsel In Distress in regards to ewoks, which is parody inside a parody) - got enough of that nonsense IRL (apart from outer layer facade), without doubt originating from popculture influence. Glad, if it is going to have even minimal influence on young girls, leaving a portrayal of protagonist that can take care of herself all right.

In any case, I would prefer to hang out with SJW than old/young farts sitting on their pathetic asses and pretending current state of affairs is right/was better in the past.

With age brings wisdom. Only the young or the foolish remain ever optimistic. And I guess brain-damaged would be category 3 if we're being pc:)
Lot of movies like that already. Usually porn.

Did it have a red, rocky landscape in it? There's this movie I've been hunting or mis-remembering for decades. Watched it when I was a kid. Similar story, all women, last men on Earth, sci-fi-ish...

As long as it's believable. I don't mind the damsels, the lesbians, the bitches, the feminists....just please God, no more Mary Sues!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The "I can anything" shit always brings down the movie, any movie.

I'm not too hyped for rogue one, I liked TFA (probably because it was just like ANH... they ruined the villain though, and they could have easily given Phasma more screentime... like I dunno she could have been the one yelling "TR-8R" in that scene.) and I know Disney can make a good movie if they put their effort into it. It is obvious Rogue One is inspired in Jedi Knight and Dark Forces and they added their few elements into it. I will wait to see it after it's released to criticize, but so far the only thing I am hoping here is that somehow they put Thrawn in there and make him canon again... and if not Thrawn, a worthy rip off based on him.

It had a red, rocky landscape for a while - before, it is happening in the underground, "hi-tech" (think hi-tech as imagined in 70') complex - albeit, it contained pretty fun twist regarding the landscape. If you watched it as a child, you might not remember the twist and only rocky landscape burned into your memories... Or, it was different movie ;) Worth checking, anyway.

Also, remember - Copernicus was a Woman. What?! Maybe Marie-Curie too?!

Ps.

I don't get Mary Sue jokes. Like, I have no idea what all of you are talking about regarding this. I'm not entirely sure if I want to know, though.

"This is a rebellion isn't it? I rebel." Oh my gosh, what a cringeworthy piece of writing. This is what I'd expect an edgy teenager to say to their parents.

I'm not expecting anything good. Disney will be doing the feminist role reversal again with the Jan Ors stand-in playing the lead while the faux Kyle can barely keep up, being a complete puss and shadow of his former incarnation. Jan will somehow be able to outsmart people far wiser and more experienced, defeat hordes of highly trained military men without breaking a sweat, and get away with acts of aggression towards her superiors that otherwise wouldn't be tolerated or even be taken seriously, especially from a woman, in the real world. Whoever her foes are within the empire, they will be hyped up to be unstoppable, except for our know-it-all heroine who will anti-climatically beat them in a completely implausible manner. The multi-cultural democratic rebellion will fight the evil white men and save the galaxy from conservatism, bringing hope to progressive Marxist idiots everywhere. I already watched a movie like that a few months ago. Why'd they have to make it again?

The people who defend movies like this and say you aren't "open minded" enough and shouldn't judge it have fallen for the trap of being too open-minded themselves. Just as one can be too close minded to understand another's perspective, you can fall for the other extreme of being too open minded, to the extent where you lose your ability to judge good from bad, becoming lost in a completely subjective world where everything is a matter of opinion and objective reality doesn't exist. Pre-judgement allows one to avoid making the same mistakes repeatedly. Non-judgement can be the cause of repeating the same mistake expecting a different outcome each time, and can be considered a form of insanity. Ironically, the "open minded" folk are often the most close minded, since they have come to the conclusion that their worldview of subjectivity is the ultimate viewpoint for all time, and wish to spread this message to everyone through passive-aggressive force and often with the support of the majority.

I agree with most of what he said except the woman thing: I'm fine with current protagonists being female and still kicking major ass.
I just don't like the re-writing of beloved material just because they want creative control over their spinoff characters.

Pretty good post defining some peoples' mindset, although in my opinion, It has absolutely nothing to do with actually giving an opinion about a movie or reviewing it.If you want to go all sociological on the movie, that's fine, but I don't think that's correct seeing as how Star Wars is not a social movie...

Star Wars is mass media that receives hundreds of millions of viewers the world over. Movies are an effective propaganda instrument as proved by the Third Reich and Communist Russia. If you do not see how hundreds of millions of people watching propaganda is dangerous, than you know nothing of history, sociology, or even basic psychology. It does not matter whether the film is a fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, or a drama. Propaganda uses archetypes and parallels, which are picked up by the subconscious mind, that covertly engender ideas with equal effectiveness regardless of the genre.

I see over and over again that people say "don't judge a movie before you've watched it. You don't know anything about it! Wait until it comes out, then judge!" This mindset, which I definitely saw a few people leaning towards on this forum, makes one an true glutton for punishment. Not only does this naive thinking lead to continual disappointment, but it attempts to shut down the rightful concerns of others who have accurately predicted future events, continuing this cycle of disappointment when it otherwise could have been stopped in its tracks forever. This means that those few who speak the truth are silenced by a foolish group of people who despite knowing nothing, through cognitive dissonance believe they know wiser. Disappointment and gullibility is repeated ad infinitum. No one grows wiser and the game continues.

I can't WAIT for Star War's next movie, hopefully featuring a gender neutral half-human half-wookiee as the main character, with a transpecies relationship (interracial is so last year!)

Let's be more progressive!
I'm very disappointed to have seen at least one white male in that trailer who may be a minor character! I DEMAND more women/ethnicities/species be given the stage!

Gender neutral? It's already happened hasn't it?
Jar Jar Binks. I can't recall any women...we assumed it was male. But now........I don't really want to look it up.
Amphibious...away dark thoughts, away.

Rogue One. The title - really gives away the entire story doesn't it? :)

Some reviews and speculations that pretty much feed the machine.
I'm surprised. I didn't recognize Donnie Yen:)

Looks like Forest Whitaker takes on the role of mentor/guy who raised her. She's a little rebel grouser which the eponymously named Rebel Alliance want to recruit/use/ally with:) And then its infiltrate, shoot, shoot, infiltrate, steal and run like hell.

Stay Frosty my friends.

Oh boy the idiots coming with gender talk again.
When I see all this gender talk, all I can really think of is WHO GIVES A SHIT?

They can fucking introduce a lead character that sexually identifies as an attack helicopter and I'll go watch the film. Where are muh male characters, where are muh self-insert? Woe is me. I watch Star Wars to see lasers and cheesy dialogue. It's only better if I can look at Felicity Jones' fine ass in the process.

I giggled :D Don't forget your tinfoil hat when the movie comes out, you have no idea what those crazy communists or nazis might be throwing at you. In fact, put two tinfoil hats just to be on the safe side. Also, read up on your marketing/sociology and/or consumer psychology and check out the full meaning of 'propaganda'. I'll give you a little hint - its not a necessarily negative thing, but that is a completely different story.

You've done precisely what I just warned about. I've predicted this movie and now I've predicted your response. There's nothing else that needs to be said here.
