[SOLVED] I can't run MBII on Linux (Ubuntu 15.05)

Hello there! Greetings from Brazil! I play MBII since 2008, but now I'm using Linux (Ubuntu 15.05) and I can't figure out how to run it.

I've downloaded the mod v1.3.1 from moddb and only get Play_MBII.bat as shortcut to play, which doesn't seem to be a linux application.

I also tried to run the official launcher but can't get it to work, even with Mono and Wine.

Can somebody please help me? Thanks in advance! ;)

You don't even have the executable in your folder. And the .bat file is a Windows batch script file, not an executable at all. Try openjk as the executable, I guess.

ok, right! Now I've downloaded all the files needed (I think so) plus a lot of libs for Linux Ubuntu, such as:

sudo apt-get install libSDL2-2.0 ia32-libs e libc6-i386

sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian:i386

sudo apt-get install g++5

sudo apt-get update

You need to find uii386.so, cgamei386.so and optionally jampgamei386.so and put them into MBII folder. I am not sure if those were built in the latest release.
I guess you will have to wait until the next release.

Thank you very much, ent, I could recover these files you said in a backup from another installation and now its working! You are awesome! :D

Ok, now unfortunatelly something very weird is happening. I finally entered MBII and configured my screen resolution to 1366 x 768 using "custom resolution" option in Setup, then clicked "apply" for this change. Now, it started a strange loop which leaves and enters the game again, showing the intro screen and video animation, than stays 1 second in the main screen, leaves the game and start this all over, I don't have time to do anything but to force close with "alt + F4" to stop this loop. It seems MBII is trying to apply the resolution forever. What is happening??? :eek:

It mays be current openjk is unstable. Or it borked up your folders loading order so it loads openjk.cfg or something from different folders with different configs.
Try to launch openjk with the startup arguements +set fs_homepath "." +set fs_game "MBII".
But before that open openjk.cfg with any text editor that supposed to be in MBII folder (if it's not there then skip that step and the the thing above). Find there the following and be sure those set as here:

I did some testing here and noticed that if I use resolutions which don't use 100% of my screen height nor full screen MBII will work, instead of that weird "looping". For instance, I've set my resolution to windowed 1366x700 (not 1366x768 as it would be fullscreen) as we can see in the screenshot below:

I noticed two other strange things: First, I cant take screenshot from inside the game, gives error "Couldn't create a file", also in the screenshot above. Second, I can't save a build for my force config, and MBII came empty with no standard builds, as seen in the screenshot below:

Yet another strange thing is that it says the mod version is 1.3.0 on the load screen, but I've download 1.3.1 from http://www.moddb.com/mods/movie-battles-ii/downloads/star-wars-movie-battles-ii-v131

So, maybe my problem is something related to MBII trying to write on files on disk without permission or in the wrong location? Or that thing about using all the height of my screen?

You ran mbii.i386 with sudo once. You should never run it with root privileges. It could create files with root permissions. You should check the files and directories in Downloads/ja, ~/.local/share/openjk and change them back to your user if they aren't.

To search for root-owned files:

find ~/.local/share/openjk -user 0
find ~/Downloads/ja -user 0

if they find something, you can change them back with (substitute USER,GROUP and FILENAME):

sudo chown -R USER:GROUP FILENAME

You can also clean files from the root home (~root/.local/share/openjk) if openjk created something there.

I use a self-compiled openjk from https://github.com/JACoders/OpenJK and it works fine. Compiling is a bit more challenging though, if you want to try that pm me, and I will try my best to help, but I'm not on ubuntu.
