Hosting Server server keeps saying "waiting for players"

me and a friend want to play some multiplayer, so I hosted a server on my computer (running linux) but when we join we can't play, we're always spectators, does anyone know what I could be doing wrong?

Were you trying to play on a custom map? Or did you change the server config in some way?

Let's get the obvious out of the way first - after you connected, did you press ESC and then click "Join" and selected and configured a class?

Having the exact same problem, and yes we clicked ESC and Play (it doesnt say Join). We picked a class, character, everything, and it just never puts us on a team. Always waiting for players and we're stuck in spectator.

Thanks this is the solution lol, been launching the game through loading the mod in base JKA.
