People don't play to win

In MB2 people aren't as focused on winning as in some other games, say Counter Strike 1.6. Here they play more "loosely", which means some people are camping the spawn or some remote location and timewasting, either on purpose or not on purpose, some are spamming taunts around or kicking/punching/melee-kataing teammates, others are having some "cool duelz" in the Gen always running away trying to perform some cool moves, taunting and standing looking at each other all while not being aware that there is anyone or anything else but them on the map, while other are focused on their little part of the battle completely ignoring the team and ignoring winning the game while caring only for their scores, while some are so frag hungry that they shoot/slash enemies even though they know it would hurt their teammates or has a chance to hurt them, or they hurt teammates on purpose, while others choose to go melee duel with the enemy or side with the enemy in killing teammates, or for merely having fun not attacking the enemies and jumping around with them and timewasting, while some are roleplaying in the main sense of that word. People are actually playing more for their scores or for some weird fun than for actually winning the game. Rarely is there any prominent teamplay, and the objectives are secondary, even those that are primary. There are usually one or two people doing the objectives and caring for them while everyone else donesn't even know when the round ends, because they were not paying attention to the objective and those one or two people sneaked behind their lines and completed it. The round limit is very long too which further promotes any camping/fooling around. The most of JKA is, in fact, like this too. This is something that isn't easy to mend, although I know the developers did everything to stop roleplaying and other things which don't have anything to do with MB2's intended gameplay.

Well as of 1.4 my numbers of hours playing this game has gone to 30 minutes instead of 5 hours a week, it got rid of some features I liked and added some weird thing. Nowaday I just play to dick around and melee fight everyone.

I personally don't like "fake progression systems." If I'm playing to progress, I'm playing to progress my own personal skill level.

People do play in the way that they find fun, and I don't think we should fight against that. Nobody has an obligation to be more serious or less serious about the game than they want to be.

Rather, at this point I think there could be some effort made to clearly establish some subcommunities oriented around general different ways to play. A "Random" (as in "Whatever") server where people do whatever they want (including timewasting), a tryhard server with rules that prioritize seriousness over shenanigans, and a "please don't tryhard" server with rules that protect shenanigans from seriousness.

So like on the Shenanigans server, if you see people doing something they think is fun, but isn't Competitive And Serious, and you run up and kill them, then an admin may kick you to protect fun.

Perhaps most people would be drawn to the Whatever server, but if (in the spirit of freedom) all timewasting was fully allowed there, then I think people would start to filter themselves into the other two servers/communities.

Maybe these could replace the three Official servers, although I wouldn't want the official Duel servers to go away cuz Duel is kind of a subcommunity in itselff. But, there could be official Do Whatever, Serious, and Shenanigan servers, and each could have RTV and RTM (cuz Full Authentic can be taken seriously too, I swear.)

It would also be good if there was a /rules command or a way to see the MOTD on demand, so that it was easier to keep the rules in mind and teach them to newbies.

alternate names for each subcommunity:
Whatever: Liberty Rules, No Rules (note: timewasting and tking would both be allowed in the spirit of do-whatever-you-want)
Serious: Competitive Rules (no timewasting or tking. And honorable melee duels count as timewasting.)
Shenanigans: For-Fun Rules (not sure if tking would or wouldn't be allowed. No breaking up other people's fun, but people can consensually TK, like if they're dueling their allies. Be constructive.)

We don't have enough people for such partitions.

I see people replying to this thread unsure whether they are replying to k4far's system or both mine and his, since mine doesn't have to do anything with the progression on the game level and I want to clear any misunderstandings. It's a micro-progression you get between rounds while being in-game. The currency you get from your score points resets each round and each round the amount of currency you get equals to the score you made in the previous round. Then you have a window like the one for skill points where you spend those currency points to get some minor benefits or minor equipment for that round, and you lose those benefits and equipments at the end of the round. This would promote playing well and according to the intended gameplay of MB2. If someone has played Counter Strike 1.6, they know what this system looks like, except the system in Counter Strike is more benefiting as you buy everything with it - guns, grenades, all ammo, etc, the things you get from skill points in MB2.

I disagree, I've hopped on during peak hours and seen US servers at say 32 and 24 players, with no other US servers even having anyone in them, which bothers me because I don't like playing with huge teams like that, and I think it's probably less-than-ideal for most of the players too cuz they're playing with a bunch of people who all have different preferences. If we got people to self-filter based on preferences we'd have smaller but more agreeable servers.

some ideas for short MOTDs for each server:
No Rules: There's no rules! Do what you want!
Competitive Rules: No timewasting or intentional TK. Play to win.
Fun Rules: Don't ruin other people's fun. Be nice.

I like this idea cuz people really do approach this game in different ways and if we allow for it then everyone'll be happier. It's kind of a "nationalism," lol.

That would work only during the peak times. Still I think people love more populated servers more. Some of those servers would die out from inactivity.
Plus, developers are strongly against roleplaying, so I don't think they would support those shenaningans servers.

@S o l d i e r True, the biggest difficulty would be competing with AOD Pandemonium. Perhaps it would only really work if we got all dictatorial and shut them down to force people to self-filter, lol.

But if it DID work I would think it wouldn't just be during peak hours. Like, if those three servers were literally the only servers available (which I'm not saying is a good idea) then if the overall population is very low, people would cluster on the No Rules server, but then maybe filter off from there as the overall population gets higher.

Old idea that I suggested a long time ago and that WAS implemented for several years, round loss = death, the vanity fuckers were less inclined to camp then.

Removed...without any notice or reason that was made public. Because everyone's a winner so long as they survive the round, right?

BRING IT BACK.

I totally agree with what you're saying here. Usually if my team decides not to listen to me and continues to hinder our chance of success by fooling around all the time I end up just having to show off my skill on my own, it earns respect and people rally to me "for fun" but it does turn out successful in the end. I do not show honor in-game simply because it keeps you from having a better chance at winning, and teammates who like to fool around and kick me for no reason in the middle of battle because they think it's funny receive able punishment from me. On top of all this I end up getting shit from players like getting called a try hard, RP nerd, etc. And complain when we manage to get the objective. There are also those who are not so much foolish because they show able skill but just are too focused on being an asshole with a good ego score and do not listen to strategy because they believe themselves to be Master Chief and take on everything by themselves then proceed to complain that the team isn't helping. Regardless of this it is really annoying having to deal with these people on a daily basis and I wish MBII was more competitive and team building rather than humble-bundlers running around being strategically inept and not contributing to the team. Sure it's good to have fun on the game as people wish but maybe make a solution for us in the community who want to take a strategic approach on Movie Battles? And you might fight this argument with clans but the clans on MBII just make me laugh, don't even get me started there.

It would result in more frequent /reconnect ing.

We would have to strictly follow objectives, and camp. Some games would be very fast other extremely long. Trolls approve especially those keen on escorting to the object behind own team's back. I am not sure GPumba would be pleased if 5th round in a row someone completed the objective and he got 5 deaths out of air.

...new players would be yelled at for not going straight to the objective.

If you want people to play for win, create some clan/team, find another five dudes and play 5 vs 5 match.

I don't know I always go for the obj and get shouted at for doing it.
People these days care more about their score than anything else. Maybe rewarding more score to people who actually do obj would be better so they show up at the top of the leaderboard regardless of their k/d (activating switches/attacking obj/hacking stuff/holding a datapad... etc). I remember battlefront did that at some point to reward way more points for doing obj stuff than killing people.

Right, but in pursuing Serious Gameplay I don't think we should oppress the people who enjoy screwing around a bit, hence my argument that we should encourage self-filtering through having servers with contrasting rulesets.

Having fun and screwing around is fine I think. I'm more pissed about tryhards tbh.

All the elements of screwing around would still be there; taunts, voice messages, etc. won't be removed. You will only have less benefits if you play that way. The point is to reward playing according to the intended gameplay of MB2, not to punish screwing around, unless in that they won't be rewarded.

Maybe there should be a threshold about how many score points you achieve in that round and getting +1 death in your score. If you achieve 0 or a negative number of score points in a round and the objective is completed or the round ended and you lost, you would get +1 death in your score.

By the way, I think teamkilling should give you -1 kill and reduce your score points in the same way killing an enemy increases them, and team damaging should reduce your score points in the same proportion damaging enemies increases your score points. I am not sure if any of these are already implemented.

If they want to screw around they can start local server and have fun, why the hell would they come and kill all fun from the purpose of this game.

Because what they enjoy is screwing around with other people and often especially with people who want to play seriously.

I screw around a lot in this game but I still play the obj. But yeah I screw around like 70% of the time but still kill people or play obj :)
Some people overdo it though but I still think everyone just has a small laugh and moves on and some (mostly new players) do it because they don't know the game yet can't be mad at them tbh :) .

Edit: My english is bad today.
