the log says I was using jasp, but I was using jamp. meh, whatever
This is because how Steam do things
Steam constantly renames files jasp.exe and jamp.exe to keep launching jasp.exe no matter which file is actually gonna be executed.
MBII Launcher does the same thing in order to be compatible with Steam.

Anyways, we cannot do much about it since it happens in the engine.
If you want, you can open issue on GitHub - JACoders/OpenJK: Community effort to maintain and improve Jedi Academy + Jedi Outcast released by Raven Software
The crash happens in OpenJK/tr_ghoul2.cpp at master · MBII/OpenJK · GitHub
There are two reasons:
there is actually an old bug,
or MBII models are modelled wrong (most likely).
Even if the models are made wrong the fix on the engine side should be applied anyways to handle bad models.
