Why the hell are there lives in Duel mode?

Because.... it is a duel mode? The name literally explains everything. Duels can be long or short. If the latter is the case, what is the point of waiting additional 4 minutes to play again? This way you can have fun dueling multiple people in a single round without much time wasting.

I think the point of this thread was why not give infinite lives for duel mode. Could easily be set up to give 99 lives to each side like aliens on the FA aliens3 map and no1 is going to die 99 times in a real duel in 5 mins.
On point with the OP it would not be a terrible idea to do this except that it guarantees any new comer to have to wait 5 mins even if there are only 2 people on.

We need infinite lives in duel mode, hate having to wait 2-3 minutes to respawn.

'Cos MB2 players have no life, it gives them a sense of false satisfaction to have lives.
With the introduction of JKA duel challenges (which is already in progress), this problem will be completely solved.

Current system is a bit hastily put together.
Ideally the system would match that of baseJKA. However due to some really amazing coding decisions done probably around 10 years ago, this is not as easy to change as we'd like.
Tempest is working on further improvements to the system, keep an eye out for those!

Also could we get all saber colors for both jedi and sith in duel? Like jedi with red and stuff? Since it's FFA it wouldn't matter there.
