How does P3 Alt-fire work?

So I am confused. Hopefully someone can help me out.

If you hold P3 and then change it's "style" so that the pistol icon turns red, you can press RMB and it shoots a flurry of charged shots. How much damage does this do and why is this here?

I'm curious if it's better to charge a shot or just use the Red-style shot.

The P3 secondary mode shoots three times, each doing 26 damage. Provided they all hit, you'll deal an entire 78 damage compared to 45 of the normal P3 primary shot.

I find it useful when dealing with sith and jedi who are about to attempt to swing at you, or when dealing with severeal low-hp enemies at once (Soldiers, for example)
