Downtime, Cause and Consequences

We are back again after almost two weeks of vanishing from the Internet. You have probably noticed that everything is different – the domain, the site, the forums. Given all that has happened the team believes the community should know the full story, so please read on.

Our State
Before the full explanation, here are the facts. We have likely lost the following forever:
  • Forums (both the original and most recent)
  • Wiki
  • Some of the backend configuration and content
  • Bug tracker and project management data
Here is what was mostly recovered / may be recoverable later:
  • Source code
  • Assets (previous revisions lost)
  • Parts of the website
  • moviebattles2.com domain (may take weeks)
The Cause
Internally within the team there was the need to do something about the server hosting. Sxx, having retired, did not wish to be involved in this anymore. He had (and still has) ownership of the old domain and server hosting all of the development, site, and forum content. The discussions surrounding this began around March-April (with the old forums being gone it is impossible to verify the exact time).

The only people with both the technical background and trusted access to make this happen were largely not available for many months after Sxx stated his desire to transfer hosting. For significant real life reasons. The topic was placed on the backburner until the issue was forced in September. Payment for the servers over this period went through Sxx’s Paypal account, but the funding was provided by members of the team and the community.

At the beginning of September Sxx made a clear deadline for this server transfer (he had withdrawn payment information from the server hosting after the month’s expenses were paid, so the servers would be shutdown in October). Due to this LoU began the process of making a backup of everything on the evening of the 13th.

Before the backup could complete, all access to the servers and domain were cut off. At first there was a great deal of confusion within the team as nothing should have expired at this point. Why would everything fail at once, both the domain’s configuration and server access? Within a few days we learned from the server provider that access to the Internet had been purposefully cut off at the server side. The only person with the capability of doing this was Sxx.

Needless to say this was unexpected. Before this was learned various team members had attempted to contact Sxx to learn what the situation with the hosting was. These attempts at contact (with a few exceptions) were answered by blocking the individual.

Before we learned the cause, GoodOl’Ben did get one response. Basically a rant stating how Sxx had warned people about needing to move hosting, that anyone could have taken care of the transferring before, and feeling harassed at the messaging asking why the site was down.

Later after learning the cause for the site being down, LoU tried confronting Sxx about it. He requested an explanation and at the very least the chance to backup the data. Sxx’s only response was for LoU to “go fuck himself”.

The Consequences
With communication having broken down, the team was left with whatever had been backed up outside of Sxx’s control (site backups were regularly made to another server, but Sxx owns this as well). What we have left is listed in the previous section. Since Sxx had the hosting and everything else in his name, we have no way of directly recovering the data from the provider unless Sxx permits access again. We do not consider this a likely possibility given recent behavior.

At this point the amount of damage Sxx has done to the Movie Battles project cannot be understated. This kind of betrayal of the community’s trust is unprecedented. Over a decade of history and a lot of effort from the past year has been lost. Despite all of that, Movie Battles development can and will still continue. We will not allow the selfish actions of one individual to destroy the project and tarnish its legacy.

Ultimately the responsibility for this failure falls to the team. For that we offer our sincerest apology to everyone in the community. Those of us who remain to lead are doing what we can to rebuild. For the new site and development, we are learning from this mistake and making changes to ensure no individual has enough control to shut down the entire project on a whim. Not much of a consolation after the fact, but that is the best way we can make the promise that something like this will never happen again.

The Future
Focusing on the current game, we will be releasing an update to the launcher soon. This will require a manual download and install as the auto update mechanism was broken with loss of control over the old domain. This launcher update will then install an updated MBII release to fix the in-game server browser. Please watch for an announcement regarding this.

Regarding the forums and site, this is still a work in progress. Parts may be missing for a little while. The forum style is still incomplete. Please be patient while this is all addressed in the coming weeks.

Awesome, welcome back guys! Let me know if you need anything.
Get the word out on the new site location to whoever you think would be interested, especially once the launcher update is released.

This goes for everyone else too. We'll have announcements going on secondary outlets, but we can't get the word out to everyone. Every little bit helps.

I have reason to believe Sxx is very burned out and as a reason is doing what he is. Not necessarily a good excuse, but I don't feel any particular grudge over this since nothing permanent was lost besides the forums.

In the end this was a nice wake up call for us. We are doing some much needed restructuring for the team and the project itself which should benefit us greatly in the end.

Also mad props for everyone popping up to like our Facebook page. It really helped motivate us when we saw so many people concerned for the game.

Yeah honestly I was surprised how reliant mb2 team was on one person to run things and after the situation with Sxx happened it should serve as a nice wake-up call to try to distribute the work / responsibility / power more evenly to ensure that one person leaving, even if on bad terms doesn't hurt the mod so badly.

Anyway I'm really glad and surprised that you guys managed to bring the site up this quickly and hopefully the server list will soon be back up as well.

Nice work.

Being honest: As with almost everything is discussed within the team and even though a few of us didn't like the idea (myself included, as jnive had been reliable) we still elected to trust him just like we had jnive before. That trust ended up being betrayed and there isn't much we can do about it now other than rebuild. Most of the source files are still intact so you don't have to worry much about that. A long time ago the level designers enacted a system where maps would have separate files based off version so that we wouldn't lose anything in the event of source control going bonkers. So all of that is still safe. The code had branches though I'm not entirely sure how that was all saved (as I never even downloaded the code repo) and should be fine as well for major version releases. Only individual changes between those releases was most likely lost (verify with someone who actually knows 100%).

We may be able to rebuild some of the version history from local caches. For example I have 12gb of various files versions.

Definitely never a good idea to let someone have that much power, especially when they're "retired". Mistakes are made, trust is betrayed, it happens, the best thing to do is learn from it. As many have said, it is a wake up call, and I believe the current team will take the necessary precautions to prevent something like this from happening again. The best we can do as a community is spread the word of the new website, continue moving forward, and build ourselves back up.

First off let me say I'm glad the Forums are online, I had like 5 posts on the old ones even with my joined in 2004 account; I lurk around every 3-4 years.

Before everyone starts going crazy about Sxx and what has happened. I'd like to thank the Moviebattles II team for keeping the mod alive, it would be easy to say "fuck it" and leave it dead as is, kind of like my [UP] clan website which existed for like 4 months. Seeing how strong the community is and how fast a new forums has been created, brings a smile to my face. I really appreciate it.

That being said, I do wonder what came over Sxx, I mean, something in him must've really snapped for him to go this far "overboard". Let's be honest here, we all still love the guy, and for what he might've taken back, I do believe he's given us alot in return these past years.

It doesn't give him a free pass to have this kind of behaviour, I'm not here to start kissing his ass, the only ass I'd kiss is LoU & Ben's for getting shit tightened fast.

Sxx, I hope you can come back to the community and all will be forgiven, retiring from a development team, and 12 years of playing; doesn't mean I'm allowing you to fuck off and go your own way you Dutchman you.

Sincerely
Cedric.

I doubt Sxx will be pardoned... Even providing the backups that we need, the way he handled the entire thing isn't appropriate for someone who was in his (former) position.

Tbh, I don't even know when he joined the team or what he actually did. And now, it's irrelevant.
Just another waste of space that wanted to cause as much damage as possible before leaving. Don't care for his reasons and don't see the point in continuing any discussion about him.

We know what he did. Some people will say let it go, others will say to string him up, set him on fire and watch him burn.
Or we can compromise and set him on fire and then let him go. Point him in the direction of the ocean or something.:)

Great job getting the new forums up.
Hopefully everything else will go smoothly.

Can't help but ask whose name the official servers are in.

He was taken on simply to do minor map modifications and scripting that I didn't have time to do. Basically minor bug fixes and tweaks. That was all.

Can't help but ask whose name the official servers are in.

LoU has EU, Spaghetti has US I believe.

Wonder what would have happened if we'd lost the facebook page and jackuls serverlist...

We need redundancies! Backups! Failsafes! Failsaves! But really, just a functioning serverlist for in-game browsing. The lifeblood of the mod is the community and interest. Even the site and work is secondary to being able to connect and see servers and each other.

Just to clarify 2 things,

1)The source code for the latest build is safe. Which imo is one of the most important things that enabled us to continue working on the mod without this stuff affecting it.

2)Hate speech will not be tolerated. I don't care if it is about Hitler or the Pope. Keep it civil.

Great to see the forum is back!

Sorry to hear all your work on the previous site was lost LoU.

I hope it is indeed a nice wake up call so something like this can't ever happen again. ;)
