Any kid-friendly/family-friendly servers?

Hi everyone! I've joined this forum after a search didn't reveal any results.

My 7-year-old boys love the mod, after initially playing JA's multiplayer, then a different major overhaul mod, and now this amazing mod.

I've watched them play, and have seen some wildly inappropriate language and behavior, unfortunately. Bad language, homophobic slurs, jokes about s*x, etc.

I want my kids to have fun but I don't want them exposed to that kind of communication.

Are there any family-friendly servers they can play on?

I'm sorry if this exists and I didn't find it; thanks in advance for your responses.

Your best bet would be to enable the chat filter. Streamer mode on the most restrictive setting will rename every player and disable all chat.

As for the topic question, the answer is no. This is not really a game or mod intended for young kids, especially with online play. Some servers are better moderated than others but even then it's always reactive.

To clarify - it is not that we dont care, it's just that this is turn of the centuary technology and very much still the wild west side of gaming. The infrastructure required and used by modern games to handle these sort of things simply doesnt exist.

As spag says. The chatbox can be disabled or restricted to team chat only - which does tend to be a little less toxic. This can all be done through the Settings -> Other -> Chat screen.

Hello, I invite you to look on the official server listing, given you are fine with playing on a european server. I'm hosting and responsible for the moderation on Sentinel servers. With our moderator/admin staff we endeavour ourselves to provide what tools and technology can't exactly fully provide ; a civilised environment for approaching the gaming in a different way than the one (too often) under our nose on today's internet.
Our educative approach is centered around socialisation with each individual player, and since the teenagers are the most common players, it is a niche for experiments with lower ages as well. I can name a few dads who already leave the game to their young teenager son.

I do not say this is a bulletproof chat sphere, but our player base are happy to live with the respect and manners we all share on our networks. As Spaghetti and Defiant forthmentioned, a chat filter with the most "direct" words should be the base approach. (You may contact me for help on how to set it up).
Keep in mind this Star Wars mod has alot of variety of personnality, so I would always suggest a "end" button as a keybind, to close the chat (or disconnect directly). In case of any potential problem. Teaching your child about it should make the first step into assuming internet can be a danger. And the stop/end is to be his own initiative, in any circumstences.

I do believe my server is mature and educated enough to provide a familly environment. Please consider this game (Just as a MMO can be) is social, and interactions with other players, will happen. This is all on how free your allowing him to be. (I personally was playing CS at the age of 8)

I suggest putting Settings -> Other -> Chat screen to Streamer Mode (strict)
This censors the chat and names

Additionally I suggest leaving your name as Padawan to stay just that extra bit anonymous

Thank you all so much for your replies! I took the steps suggested to turn on the strict filter in chat, and renamed to Padawan.

We figured out how to join Sentinel Duel, so we'll see how it goes!

I forgot to add in my previous message, if you like, you can inform the moderator team before your child start playing, so we can keep a more solid eye!
Either send me a direct message on this forum, or join Sentinel's discord and inform (me or) the moderator team directly!

I wish you a happy gaming!

That's awesome. Thank you. I'll keep that in mind. We did go into the Sentinel servers just now (both) but no one is online right now. He's in Jed'aii-something-or-other server right now.

So strange. Everyone knows that in the heart of every troll lies a child stomping on sand castles with unrestricted glee.

Let the kids be kids. Wild and free. Like the sun. Pleasant, yet radioactive. There be poop in that sand.

We are indeed abit inactive this summer, after 3 long years of intense activity that's a welcome break on our end we can't hide that ^^

/cg_chatbox 0 is probably the best thing to do if you have kids. Even if you use the filter, some genius will think of a way to bypass.
That doesn't cover names and prints from things like kills. Streamer mode aliases names, hides prints where names occur, and hides chat.

It's possible something was missed there, but I haven't seen any reports of such since it was added.

Fair enough - didn't know Streamer mode completely disables chat!

Looks like Streamer mode is the way to go :)

Streamer mode doesn't hide the name of assists lol. The kids will still be exposed to inappropriate names.
Assist names are aliased in the exact same way as the name of the player that died. The only exception is your own name, but that shouldn't be considered an issue for obvious reasons.

This has been a thing for as long as streamer mode has been out. I'm set to strict streamer mode btw. It takes 2 seconds to test this, try it yourself.

I did actually check it before after you brought it up, but obviously not well enough. It will be fixed in the next release.

A good reminder that devs aren't psychic and just because some people say 'everyone knows about X bug' doesn't actually make it so. Detailed bug reports do make a difference in what gets fixed, so thank you for taking the bare minimum effort.
