I need help with setting up a private server to play with my friends.

I have no clue what do do since the create server option doesnt work for my friends. They cant find the server I create and so I wondered if there was another way to maybe join a server in a different way than scrolling the server list. And I want to create a server that I can play in 2. Or I think I heard something about an ip adress but im not sure. Help is very much appreciated. Thx
