Having active admins to maintain a non-hostile and enjoyable atmosphere will definitely increase activity on the official servers. The more trustworthy and active admins to moderate the servers the better, especially in order to host regular events.

Try running using OpenJK. If he already has MBII installed, locate your GameData folder and launch using mbii.x86. I had a similar problem and OpenJK is the only way JKA works for me, base or MBII.
